Intercession of Saint Roch
(1295 to 1327)

Saint Roch, at the age of twenty you gave all your possessions to the poor and set out on a pilgrimage to Rome. You entered Italy during the plague and tended to the sick, miraculously healing many by placing the sign of the cross on their foreheads. While aiding the sick in Piacenza you became afflicted, suffering a large bubo (an open sore from the swelling of the glands in the groin). You were expelled from the town and retreated to the forest to die, but were miraculously healed by a dog who licked your wounds and brought bread to you daily. Centuries after your death your intercession was invoked, leading to many cures.
